Bay Pines VA Healthcare System
Tobacco Free Program
As a health care provider charged with providing the very best care to our nation’s heroes, the Bay Pines VAHCS is committed to providing a healthy and safe environment for employees, patients, staff, and visitors while also promoting positive, healthy behaviors. If you currently use tobacco and would like to cut back or quit, the Bay Pines VAHCS can help!
The Bay Pines VAHCS offers Tobacco Free resources for Veterans, family members, and employees. Tobacco treatment coaches offer the highest level of support, education, and behavioral strategies to aid in the journey to become tobacco free. Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and other medications are also available for interested veterans and employees.
Research has demonstrated that a person has the best chance of quitting tobacco when they:
- Use tobacco cessation medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
- Take part in tobacco cessation counseling
Our Tobacco Free Program meets once per week for approximately 1-hour. Different topics are addressed each week, providing the necessary tools and skills to help you achieve success. Veterans are encouraged to monitor their tobacco use and set a quit date within the first few weeks of attendance. Additionally, ongoing support is provided by our veteran volunteers who have also quit tobacco products.
- Who can attend? Any Veteran, VA Staff Member, family members/friends
- Where are classes held? C.W. Bill Young VA Medical Center and select VA Community Outpatient Clinics

In October 2012, the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System became tobacco-free, both indoors and outdoors – for all properties except in designated tobacco areas. This policy change impacted the main medical center campus in Bay Pines, and all satellite outpatient clinic locations, in addition to all tobacco users on each campus, including patients, visitors, employees, volunteers, students and vendors. The policy covers all tobacco products, including chewing tobacco and vapor/e-cigarettes.
