Bay Pines VA Healthcare System to Host Breast Cancer Health Fairs Oct. 24

Bay Pines, Fla. –The Bay Pines VA Healthcare System (BPVAHCS) will host breast cancer health fairs on Wednesday, October 24, 2018, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The activities will take place in the main entrances at both the C.W. Bill Young VA Medical Center campus (Building 100) and the Lee County Healthcare Center in Cape Coral, Fla. The fairs are being held to provide information and resources about breast cancer prevention, and services provided by the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System. Informational materials and other giveaways will be available. The event is open to the public.
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, following lung cancer. Besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women. About one in eight U.S. women will develop breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. This makes breast cancer a serious concern for women Veterans. The good news is that localized breast cancer has a 99 percent survival rate if detected early, and VA leads the nation’s health care systems in providing mammograms to those who need them (VHA Patient Safety and Quality Report).
