Veterans now offered same-day audiology services without an appointment

September 7, 2016

BAY PINES, FL --
The Bay Pines VA Healthcare System now offers audiology services without an appointment at the C.W. Bill Young VA Medical Center.  Veterans can simply walk-in the Audiology Clinic located on the first floor of the medical center during walk-in hours and be seen by a provider within about 30 minutes for hearing evaluations, hearing aid fittings and more.

Called an “open health care access model,” the enhanced service comes as an added improvement to the Audiology department’s direct scheduling program which eliminated the requirement for Veterans to first seek a referral by a primary care provider before receiving an audiology appointment. Efforts are underway to spread Audiology’s open access model across southwest Florida and into most of the healthcare system’s outpatient clinics in early 2017.

In some locations, restaurant style pagers will be used to assist with walk-in appointments and patient flow – a unique and innovative strategy supported by Bay Pines leaders. Employees within the department say the enhanced service eliminates some of the time consuming administrative tasks associated with appointment management and allows them to do what they do best – provide exceptional health care services to America’s Veterans.

Feedback from Veterans has also been extremely positive as they now have the opportunity to seek audiology care when it is most convenient for them.

The Audiology open access model is just one of many ways Bay Pines is providing same-day access to health care services for southwest Florida Veterans.
