Bay Pines VA to commemorate Vietnam War on April 5

BAY PINES, FL – The Bay Pines VA Healthcare System (VAHCS) will commemorate the 5oth Anniversary of the Vietnam War and recognize the service and sacrifice of Vietnam Veterans and their families during a ceremony on Tuesday, April 5, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The event will take place in the courtyard located buildings 2 and 37 on the C.W. Bill Young VA Medical Center campus. Vietnam Veterans who attend the event will receive a special commemorative lapel pin. The event is open to all Veterans, their family and friends, and the general public. 

Keynote speaker for the event will be U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. (ret.) Gary L. Littrell. Littrell is a Medal of Honor recipient who distinguished himself while serving as a Light Weapons Infantry Advisor with the 23rd Battalion, 2nd Ranger Group, Republic of Vietnam Army, near Dak Seang formerly located in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. Jolly, 13th Congressional District of Florida, will also provide remarks during the ceremony.  

Other speakers will include local officials from the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System, St. Petersburg VA Regional Office and Bay Pines National Cemetery.

The event will also feature musical performances; a special parade of colors provided by the Vietnam Veterans of America; and traditional military presentations to include the posting and retiring of the U.S. Flag, a firing salute, a taps performance and more.

Local news personality and News Channel 8 Chief Meteorologist Steve Jerve will serve as master of ceremonies for the event.

Signage will be posted on the medical center campus to direct visitors to the venue. Reserved and general parking will be available nearby. A shuttle service will also be available to provide transportation for guests from parking lots to the ceremony area. The event will take place outdoors. The Bay Pines VAHCS encourages all attendees to dress appropriately in the event of inclement weather.
