Bay Pines VAHCS to Hold Mental Health Summit August 22

August 19, 2014

BAY PINES, FL. – The Bay Pines VA Healthcare System will host a mental health summit titled, "Improving the Mental Health of Veterans and Their Family Members" on Friday, August 22, from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the St. Petersburg College Library Conference Center in Seminole, Fla.

The purpose of the summit is to bring together key stakeholders in the community with the goal of enhancing access to mental health services and addressing the mental health care needs of Veterans and their family members residing in the community. The summit will provide an opportunity for direct dialogue and active engagement between VA and community partners.

"This is a great opportunity for all of us to sit at the same table, to listen and learn from each other," said Dr. Alfonso Carreno, Chief, Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences Service, Bay Pines VAHCS.

"The Bay Pines VA Healthcare System has a variety of specialized mental health programs and services available to Veterans, however, we cannot do everything alone," he continued. Engagement and collaboration with our community partners are important to ensuring Veterans receive high quality and coordinated services both inside and outside the VA system."

The summit will feature VA mental health care presentations and "breakout" sessions intended to address specific collaborative opportunities to include engagement with Veterans and families; Veterans in the justice system and connecting them to VA and community services; community integration and recovery; navigating VA and community resources, and more.

Table displays will also be available for VA and community organizations to provide materials about available programs and services.

Due to limited conference space, event participation is by invitation only. Media representatives interested in covering the event are encouraged to contact Jason Dangel, Public Affairs Officer, Bay Pines VAHCS, at 727-398-9531 or email
