Op Ed: Honor and Thank Doctors on March 30

March 27, 2014

The nation officially celebrates National Doctors' Day on Sunday, March 30, 2014.  On this day, we honor all of our present and past physicians for the exemplary work they do to take care of patients.

The Bay Pines VA Healthcare System employs nearly 500 doctors who come to work every day to take care of our nation’s heroes – committed to the VA mission and dedicated to their profession.  The skilled hands of our physicians offer encouragement, expertise and support.  Their caring hearts are displayed on the faces of the Veterans they help.  Their professionalism helps fulfill our nation’s commitment to honor and serve those who served us so well.

The first Doctors' Day observance was March 30, 1933, in Winder, Ga. on the anniversary of the first use of general anesthetic in surgery.  On March 30, 1958, a Resolution Commemorating Doctor’s Day was adopted by the U.S. House of Representatives.  In 1990, Congress established March 30 each year as the National Doctor’s Day.

In honor of our VA doctors’ tireless efforts at the Bay Pines VAHCS and across our great nation, thank you for caring for our sick, advancing medical knowledge, and promoting the good health of the brave men and women we have the honor and privilege to serve.

Dominique A. Thuriere, MD
Chief of Staff, Bay Pines VA Healthcare System
