2014 Veterans Creative Arts Festival

January 17, 2014

BAY PINES, FL – The Bay Pines VA Healthcare System’s C.W. Bill Young VA Medical Center will host the annual Veterans Creative Arts Festival local competition on Feb.  13 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  The event will take place in the JC Cobb room located on the first floor of the main medical center building.

Held in conjunction with VA’s National Salute to Veteran Patients Week – a week designated to pay tribute and express appreciation to Veterans - the competition includes 53 categories in the visual arts division this year that range from oil painting to leatherwork to paint-by-number kits.  In addition, there are 120 categories in the performing arts pertaining to all aspects of music, dance, drama and creative writing.

“Across our healthcare system, we incorporate creative arts into our recreation therapy program to further positive health outcomes for patients,” said Suzanne M. Klinker, Director, Bay Pines VAHCS.  “Our annual festival and competition recognizes progress and recovery made through recreation therapy, and brings awareness to the creative achievements of our nation’s heroes.”

Veterans enrolled for VA health care services through the Bay Pines VAHCS are invited to register for the event and compete in one or several of the following divisions: visual art, creative writing, dance, drama or music.  A national selection committee chooses first, second and third place winners among all of the entries.  Select winners will be invited to attend the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival in Milwaukee, Wis. on Oct. 27 – Nov. 2.

Veterans interested in registering should contact Erin Todd at 727-398-6661 extension 5884 or Jenny Campbell at extension 2793.   Family members, friends and general spectators are also welcome to attend.

Media interested in covering the event are encouraged to contact the Bay Pines VAHCS Office of Public Affairs at 727-398-6661 extension 5031 or email vhabaypublicaffairs@va.gov.
