Bay Pines, FL – The Bay Pines VA Healthcare System used $523,000 in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Stimulus Funds) to change its campus lighting to an LED system which saves energy and enhances safety.

The VA retrofitted 245 high pressure sodium exterior parking lights with LED (light-emitting diode) luminaries.  LEDs were selected in order to provide the necessary intensity of light in an outdoor setting as well as optical control.  The VA expects to save almost $40k per year in energy costs and another $17k in maintenance since the LEDs don’t burn out as often.  The project completed in July.

Tony Mora, Bay Pines' manager for this project, said, "The parking lot and especially the roadway illumination are amazing, with a lot less glare and very bright, even white light.  We’ve had many staff and patients comment positively about the change."
