Research has been, and continues to be, crucial to the improvement of medical care. The general objective of the Research & Development (R&D) Service is to support the VA’s mission for patient care through:

• Producing new knowledge leading to improvements in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases
• Enhancing the quality of healthcare, access to care, and cost effectiveness
• Improving the functional independence and quality of life for veterans
• Attracting and retaining highly qualified medical professionals who provide veterans with a high standard of clinical care
