National Survey Shows Bay Pines a Preferred Training Facility for Future Healthcare Professionals - Results of a national survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Office of Academic Affiliations show that the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System (VAHCS) is a preferred place for future healthcare professionals to learn and train. Veterans now offered same-day audiology services without an appointment - The Bay Pines VA Healthcare System now offers audiology services without an appointment at the C.W. Bill Young VA Medical Center. Veterans can simply walk-in the Audiology Clinic located on the first floor of the medical center during walk-in hours and be seen by a provider within about 30 minutes for hearing evaluations, hearing aid fittings and more. Bay Visions News Brief – Bay Pines Partners with the Community for Emergency Exercise - Dozens of VA and local community emergency personnel rushed to a small building located at the C.W. Bill Young VA Medical Center. According to reports, inclement weather had damaged the building causing serious injuries to many inside. Without delay, police, firemen and others responded to the scene, ensured the safety of the building and evacuated victims to the medical center’s emergency room. This was the scene at the medical center for the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System’s annual mass casualty exercise on Aug. 10. (09/02/2016)

Bay Pines Earns National Accreditation for Cancer Program - The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) has granted three-year Accreditation to the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System’s (VAHCS) cancer program. To earn voluntary CoC accreditation, a cancer program must meet 34 CoC quality care standards, be evaluated every three years through a survey process, and maintain levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive patient-centered care. Bay Pines VA Recognized Nationally for Patient Safety Practices - The Bay Pines VA Healthcare System (VAHCS)was recognized nationally as a 2015 Cornerstone Recognition Award gold winner by the VA National Center for Patient Safety on November 18. VA Awards Local Grants to Prevent and End Homelessness - Hundreds of low-income Veteran families in southwest Florida, who are permanently housed or transitioning to permanent housing, will have access to crucial services with the award of approximately $9.3 million in grants under the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program. Veteran Viewpoint Episode 4: "The VA Set Me Free" - Nearly two years ago, U.S. Army Vietnam Veteran John Brouwer contracted an aggressive bacterial infection in his legs that ultimately resulted in a double leg amputation at a hospital in the community. Following his surgery, medical professionals at the hospital told John he would never walk again and would forever be confined to a wheelchair. Today, John is strong enough to wear prosthetic legs and is getting closer to his goal of walking without support by the minute. He credits his recovery to VA recreation therapy. (09/14/2015)
