Man receiving a flu shot from a health care provider

Getting a flu shot is now more convenient than ever.

Wednesday, October 30, 2013

Flu season is here and getting your flu shot has never been easier.  Remember that getting vaccinated is the single best way to protect yourself, as well as your loved ones, against the flu virus.

This year, VA health care facilities at locations in Florida within the VISN 8 Network are participating in a pilot program to offer enrolled patients a new option to receive their flu shot.

In addition to providing no cost flu shots at VA medical centers and clinics, Veterans enrolled for VA care the VISN 8 Network have a number of convenient locations to get a flu shot including:

VA medical centers and clinics: You can receive a no cost flu shot during any scheduled appointment, if you are admitted to our facility or at one of the convenient walk-in flu stations.  For more information on locations and hours, click here.

Non-VA Providers and Pharmacies: Many local retail pharmacies offer flu shots that may be covered by private insurance or programs such as Medicare.  If you do not have insurance, there will usually be a charge.

Walgreens and the VA Retail Care Coordination Program:  If you choose to get your flu shot from a local Walgreens in the VISN 8 service area, which includes most of Florida⁴ and are a Veteran patient, Walgreens can send your immunization record electronically to your local VA medical center. While participation is strictly voluntary, simply let the Walgreens clinician know that you are an enrolled Veteran patient and you would like your information provided to VA.

Note: Reference to non-VA pharmacies, including Walgreens, does not constitute or imply endorsement of these organizations, their services or products. ²If your local pharmacy is currently not participating in the VA Retail Immunization Program, they may participate in the future as the program expands.³Vaccine is subject to availability. State and health-related restrictions may apply. If you do not have insurance coverage, there may be a charge for a flu shot. ⁴The following counties in Florida are EXCLUDED from the Walgreens/VA Retail Care Coordination Program: Bay, Washington, Holmes, Walton, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa and Escambia.
