BAY PINES, FL – Hundreds of Bay Pines VA Healthcare System employees, family members and friends gathered to welcome the organization’s new chief of staff, Dr. Dominique A. Thuriere, during a reception at the healthcare system's primary medical center on Jan. 29.
The celebration was held on the heels of a system-wide announcement made by Suzanne Klinker, Director, Bay Pines VAHCS, on Jan. 9 informing more than 3,800 employees that Thuriere was selected for organization’s top clinical executive position.
"Dr. Thuriere's collaborative spirit, interest in innovation, and dedication to mentoring today's and tomorrow's health care professionals all while being an active participant in the community makes her an ideal leader for Bay Pines VA Healthcare System," said Klinker in her message to staff.
"When I think of VA's core values and how each of us are to model these – Integrity, Advocacy, Respect, and Excellence – Dr. Thuriere's leadership comes to my mind. Throughout her career, she has been recognized as a passionate and selfless leader concerned with the health and welfare of Veterans and their families, and doing what is right for our staff and stakeholders."
Prior to Thuriere's appointment, she served as the healthcare system's Chief, Mental Health and Behavioral Science Service since 2000 prior to becoming the organization's Acting Chief of Staff last June. As the Chief of the Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences Service, she provided oversight and held responsibility for a large and complex mental health service comprised of 14 subspecialty programs staffed by 138 mental health professionals. During her tenure as chief, the service expanded exponentially and was recognized by VA as one of the best mental health services in the nation.
Thuriere started her VA career in 1990 at the James A. Haley Veterans Hospital in Tampa as an inpatient psychiatrist and joined the staff at Bay Pines in 1993. In addition to her work in VA, she also has a faculty appointment at the University of South Florida College of Medicine.
Thuriere is a graduate of the State University of New York at Buffalo College of Medicine and completed her residency training in New York City at the North Shore University Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. She is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
"I come to work every day with a clear and singular purpose: to treat Veterans with compassion and to offer them the highest quality care. If I have accomplished this so far, it is only because I have been fortunate enough to work with extremely talented and dedicated VA health care professionals that come to work every day with that same mission," Thuriere said.
"I am extremely honored to have been named chief of staff, and look forward to working with all of our clinical and administrative professionals at Bay Pines as we continue to provide the very best health care services to our Veterans."
