The primary mission of Research & Development is to improve quality of care through basic science and clinical research. All levels of the organization, as well as the research service, are responsible for protecting the research participants’ human rights, safety, and well being. Research projects are reviewed by the Institutional Review Board (IRB). The IRB ensures compliance with Federal and State laws, the Common Rule, ethical principles of the Belmont Report, and local regulations. The IRB at the Bay Pines VA Health Care System is independent (FWA 00000979); a subcommittee of the Research & Development Committee; and, responsible for protecting the health, welfare, and rights of human research subjects. The Veterans Health Administration Central Office IRB#1 is included as an IRB of designation in our FWA 00000979.
The VA-affiliated non-profit Bay Pines Foundation, Inc. (FWA 00001906) assists Research & Development Service in conducting research.
