LAUREN E. KITTEL BRICKMAN, Psy.D.

Clinical Psychologist, Substance Abuse Treatment Program

In March 2008, Dr. Brickman joined the Bay Pines VHA as a clinical psychologist with the Substance Abuse Treatment Program for the Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences Service. Dr. Brickman has training and experience as a clinician and researcher. From 2000 to 2008, as a Research Scientist at the New York State Psychiatric Institute at Columbia University and then as a Research Investigator with Columbia University and private consultant, Dr. Brickman worked to develop and test evidenced-based interventions for use with drug-involved populations. She successfully coordinated and co-directed operations for several large-scale clinical research trials funded by the National Institute of Health. In addition to intervention development and application, Dr. Brickman has extensive experience in the development of protocols for electronic assessment and data and safety monitoring including delivery of services to homebound and homeless populations. Dr. Brickman has also served as a consultant to various other research efforts in New York, New Jersey and Florida such as the Couples Project, the Parent Readiness Program, and Recovery for Drug-Involved Couples. Dr. Brickman's work is focused primarily on the prevention of spread of disease and the impact of chronic illness, especially drug addiction, on families. At Bay Pines, Dr. Brickman is developing a Family Education Program for veterans and their families within the Substance Abuse Treatment Program. She is also involved in delivery of clinical services and program evaluation and evidenced-based research activities.

SCOTT CHAPMAN, Psy.D.

Dr. Chapman received his bachelor's and doctoral degrees in Clinical Psychology from the Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Florida (B.S., 1981 and Psy.D., 1987) and a master's degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of Alaska, Anchorage in 1983. He has been a licensed psychologist since 1988 and is currently licensed in New York State. His treatment approaches emphasize cognitive, behavioral and humanistic styles and his clinical interests include substance abuse, behavioral medicine (especially treatment/compliance issues and stress management), forensic assessment, group psychotherapy, and trauma issues. Prior employment includes a group private practice in South Dakota followed by a Clinical Team Leader position for a dual diagnosis treatment unit at the Canandaigua VAMC in New York. Since beginning his employment at the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System in 1997, Dr. Chapman has worked in the Mental Health Outpatient Clinic and Sexual Trauma Residential Treatment Program. Since 2006, he has worked in Primary Care Medicine focusing on behavioral health issues as well as chronic medical problems such as infectious diseases and diabetes mellitus. His hobbies and outside interests include reading, sports, the arts, and traveling with his wife and two daughters.

JUDITH B. CONNELLY, Psy.D.

Dr. Connelly is the Program Director of the Sexual Trauma Program and a member of the treatment team for the Center for Sexual Trauma Services. Primary clinical interests are in PTSD secondary to sexual trauma, individual and group psychotherapy, Exposure Therapy, and women's health care issues. She is a member of the American Psychological Association. She has presented nationally for clinical training in the treatment of military sexual trauma, addressing issues of exposure-based treatment for PTSD, sexual trauma and Axis II disorders, counter transference issues and vicarious PTSD. Outside interests include travel, antique collecting, race walking, hiking, good books, and Yorkies.

JOEL J. EPSTEIN, Ph.D.

Dr. Epstein provides neuropsychological assessment to outpatients through the Neuropsychology Assessment Clinic. A flexible test battery approach is utilized. Primary patient populations include TBI's, dementias, CVA's, and seizure disorders. Dr. Epstein is a member of APA, APA Division 40 - Clinical Neuropsychology, and the National Academy of Neuropsychology. He maintains an independent practice. As part of his practice, he performs forensic exams for the Pasco and Pinellas County Court Systems.

ALLAN D. FINE, Ph.D.

Dr. Fine's interests are in Vocational Rehabilitation, Occupational Development, PTSD, and Stress and Burnout. He serves as the case manager for clients identified as having vocational rehabilitation needs and provides vocational assessment and counseling. Outside interests include woodworking, sports, music and computers.

DAVID S. GREENFIELD, Ph.D.

Substance Abuse Treatment Program

Dr. Greenfield has training and experience in provision of clinical and rehabilitation counseling services to veterans and community mental health patients. He is a staff psychologist on the Substance Abuse Treatment Program. Duties include psychological and other assessments, relapse prevention groups, case management of individual patients, Peer Review, Quality Assurance, and Training Committees. He is also the Chairman of the recently constituted Title 38 Hybrid Professional Standards Board (PSB). Theoretical orientation is eclectic but emphasizes cognitive-behavioral and Rogerian Techniques. Community Mental Health experiences included forensic psychology, supervision, educational presentations, and grant writing. He is a member of the American Psychological Association. Served three years as Secretary-Treasurer of National Organization of VA Psychologists and is a Past President of both the National Organization of VA Psychologists and the McLennan County Psychological Association (Texas). He continues to be an active member of the APA accreditation site visitor pool. Enjoys traveling, refereeing youth soccer games, swimming, bicycling, going to the beach, watching good movies, winning bowling championships, playing spirited racquet ball games and volunteering at the Medical Center Credit Union where he currently serves on its Board.

BROOK HAY, Psy.D.

Dr. Hay works in the PTSD program, primarily with the Center for Sexual Trauma Services- Outpatient Program (CSTS-O). Her primary clinical interests include the treatment of sexual trauma, as well as relationship and family issues. Additionally, she has interest and experience in substance abuse treatment. Prior to joining the CSTS team as a staff member, Dr. Hay completed her internship at Bay Pines.

MARY M. LEVENSON, Ph.D., ABPP, CHE

Assistant Chief, Mental Health & Behavioral Sciences Service

Dr. Levenson provides administrative oversight and supervision for Mental Health & Behavioral Sciences Service (MH&BSS) clinical programs and also serves as the Supervising Psychologist and Director of Training for the Pre-Doctoral and Post-Doctoral Psychology Internship Training Program. Her clinical interests include behavioral medicine and medical psychology with completion of board certification in Clinical Health Psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychologists. In addition, she is board certified in healthcare management by the American College of Healthcare Executives. Dr. Levenson is a graduate of the VA's Executive Career Field Development Program, the Health Care Leadership Institute and Leadership VA. She is particularly interested in VA organizational change to promote excellence in quality and access to mental health care for Veterans. She previously served as Director of Training at Bay Pines VA Healthcare System from 1988 to 1992. Dr. Levenson is also active in implementation of the Recovery Model and provides clinical services within the Steps of Life and Homeless Programs. Outside interests include bread making (the old-fashioned way), writing, and care of two Havanese "puppies."

PATRICIA N. LYLE, Ph.D.; SMSgt (RET), USAF

Dr. Lyle joined the Mental Health Clinic in 2006 after completing her doctoral internship at Bay Pines. During her training, she focused on the treatment of sexual trauma, combat trauma, and substance addictions. She has a particular interest in the role of disrupted childhood attachment and maladaptive coping skills in post-traumatic functioning. Her current duties in the Mental Health Clinic include consultation and treatment of a variety of serious mental illnesses. Treatment modalities are somewhat eclectic, with emphasis on cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal, and emotion-focused therapies. Due to her military background, Dr. Lyle takes a particular interest in serving veterans, in both clinical and administrative areas. She is a member of the Institutional Review Board for Bay Pines VA, the Mental Health Clinic Performance Improvement Committee, and the MHC Advanced Clinic Access Committee. Prior to her academic training, Dr. Lyle served 20 years in the United States Air Force as a jazz vocalist, and continues to enjoy music, reading, fishing, and gourmet cooking with her husband.

PATRICIA MCDERMOTT, Psy.D.

Dr. McDermott is a member of the treatment team on the inpatient combat stress unit. Prior to working at this facility she worked at the Canandaigua VAMC in Canandaigua, NY in and outpatient PTSD program and at Rapid City Vet Center in Rapid City, SD. She has worked with Combat Veterans who served in Desert Storm, Vietnam, Korea and World War II since 1986, providing both individual and group psychotherapy. Additionally, she has been an active member of the trauma debriefing team.

KELLY M. MONETTE, Psy.D.

Dr. Monette provides assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of psychiatric disorders with veterans in a home setting as a member of the Home-Based Primary Care Program (HBPC). Her primary clinical interests are the assessment and treatment of psychological disorders in a geriatric population. Prior to working at this facility, Dr. Monette completed a one-year post-doctoral residency in Geropsychology/Neuropsychology at the Miami VA. Her clinical focus during residency included pain/palliative care, neuropsychological assessment, and psychotherapy with primarily a geriatric population. She also completed her internship at Bay Pines. Dr. Monette is a member of the American Psychological Association and has an affiliation with Division 18, Psychologists in Public Service. She is also a member of the Psychology Training Committee for the internship training program. Outside interests include boating and running.

CAROL O'BRIEN, Ph.D.

Chief, PTSD Programs

Dr. O'Brien's primary clinical interests are in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, the psychological aspects of women's health care, and gender-specific aspects of psychiatric disorders. Dr. O'Brien is the Chief of PTSD Programs (which includes the Center for Sexual Trauma Services and the Stress Treatment Program). She is also the Military Sexual Trauma Point of Contact and a PTSD Mentor for VISN 8. She is actively involved in research regarding the psychological sequelae of sexual trauma and has expertise in grant writing and program development. She has previously worked in the areas of substance abuse, dual-diagnosis, neuropsychology, and rehabilitation; and she maintains an interest in those areas. She is a devoted grandmother, an avid handcycler, and also enjoys swimming, a good novel, and any kind of seafood.

DANIEL F. PENROD, Ph.D.

Dr. Penrod is assigned to the Mental Health Clinic. His interest is brief reality-oriented therapy. He utilizes aspects of psychodynamic and cognitive -behavioral orientations to facilitate treatment. Prior to moving to the Mental Health Clinic, Dr. Penrod was assigned to the inpatient psychiatric section of the service. Other interests include gardening and trains.

DAVID L. SLACK, Ph.D.

Dr. Slack is the Training Director of the Psychology internship Program. He specializes in Clinical Geropsychology and provides psychological services to the Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) Unit, the Transitional Care Unit, Inpatient Hospice Unit, the Nursing Home Care Units, and the Geriatric Primary Care Outpatient Clinic. He has received extensive training in Geropsychology. In 1989, he was awarded a NIMH Postdoctoral Fellowship in Geriatrics and studied at Stanford University and the Palo Alto VAMC. He holds specialized clinical privileges in Geropsychology and Neuropsychology. Dr. Slack is also a member of the training committee for the internship training program.

BRIAN A. WILSON, Ph.D.

Dr. Wilson is a member of the residential treatment team at the Center for Sexual Trauma Services. Primary clinical interests are the assessment and treatment of PTSD and sexual trauma. His theoretical orientation is integrative and can be characterized as a psychodynamically informed, cognitive-behavioral approach. Additional interests and areas of competence include primary care psychology, health psychology, and serious and persistent mental illness. Outside interests include health and fitness, organic/green living, indie films, and live music.

DEBORAH KASPRZYK, M.Ed.

Social Science Program Specialist

Mrs. Kasprzyk provides mental health services in a variety of primary care outpatient settings. Mrs. Kasprzyk provides the Mental Health component of the national MOVE! Program (Managing Obese/Overweight Veteran's Everywhere), an interdisciplinary weight loss program offered at Bay Pines, and the Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC's). Mrs. Kasprzyk teaches classes in the 12 week MOVE II series and facilitates coping skills and education for MOVE IV, the bariatric program at Bay Pines. She provides individual and group counseling, as well as MOVE classes at the South St Petersburg CBOC, and serves as a liaison to screen and refer patients as needed. She is also part of the Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation teams, facilitating groups and educational presentations. With a BA in Social Work, and post-graduate counseling degree specializing in both group counseling and psychological testing, Mrs. Kasprzyk has a wide variety of experiences working with both juvenile and adult populations. She has taught on the graduate level as adjunct faculty at ETSU and has expertise in conducting psychological assessments in a variety of settings. She has worked as a mental health counselor, an addictions therapist, and has served as a women's health advocate. She actively volunteers for her children's school and extra-curricular activities, along with enjoying sports, creative arts, reading and traveling.

ROSEMARY A. DUMAS
Administrative Support Assistant

Ms. Dumas serves as Education Administrator/Coordinator for various training programs in Mental Health & Behavioral Sciences Service (MH&BSS). Her primary responsibilities include the administration and management of the Bay Pines Psychology Internship Program, University of South Florida Psychiatry Residency & Medical Student Programs, Osteopathic Medical Student Program and various Physician Assistant Programs. Ms. Dumas is a member of the Psychology Training Committee, the MH&BSS Performance Improvement Committee and the Quality of Care Review Committee. She is also involved in the patient satisfaction survey process. In her leisure time, Ms. Dumas enjoys traveling to historic sites, swimming, snorkeling, bicycling, crafts and puttering in the garden.
